Kirton McConkie is pleased to announce that Ruth Madrigal, a nationally recognized advisor on tax-exempt organizations, has joined the firm’s Tax practice and Tax-Exempt Organizations group. Madrigal brings more than 25 years of experience advising charitable, educational, healthcare, governmental, and other non-profit organizations on complex tax, governance, and policy matters.

Madrigal joins the firm from KPMG’s Washington National Tax practice, where she led the Exempt Organizations Group. Prior to that, she served in the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Tax Policy, where she advised on all matters affecting the nonprofit sector and promoted Treasury guidance projects, including on foreign grantmaking, program-related investments and mission-related investing.

“Ruth’s addition reflects the firm’s continued investment in serving our tax-exempt clients and in strengthening our Tax practice. It complements the recent arrivals of Justin Jesse, a former IRS litigator with significant tax controversy and international tax experience, and Ross Poulson, a corporate and transactional tax expert with over 20 years of government and big-firm experience,” said Robert Walker, firm president. “Ruth’s deep substantive knowledge and practical problem-solving approach will enhance our ability to serve clients facing an increasingly complex and rapidly changing tax environment.”

Her arrival also reunites her with Michael W. Durham, leader of Kirton McConkie’s Tax-Exempt Organizations practice. The two practiced together early in their careers at Caplin & Drysdale before Madrigal’s government service and subsequent leadership role at KPMG.

“Ruth Madrigal is one of the most respected practitioners in the exempt organizations field,” said Michael Durham. “Her experience in both private practice and government service is an extraordinary addition to our team. We are thrilled to welcome her to Kirton McConkie. Together with up-and-coming shareholders Lucas Deppermann and Alyssa Depew, we are excited at the depth we can offer our tax-exempt clients.”

Throughout her career, Madrigal has advised tax-exempt organizations, their donors, and other individuals and businesses seeking to make positive impacts in their communities. She is a frequent speaker and recognized thought leader in the field.
