Julie Crane is a shareholder with over a decade of experience advising organizations on global data privacy, AI regulation, and cross-border legal and regulatory matters. She leads a dedicated team that helps clients navigate complex privacy and technology challenges, including artificial intelligence, automated decision-making, and the implementation of practical, enterprise-wide compliance programs.

 

Ms. Crane’s practice focuses on advising multinational companies, nonprofits, and foreign entities on global privacy and data protection compliance, international data transfers, AI governance, cybersecurity incident response, and risk management across more than 140 jurisdictions. She also assists companies expanding internationally with foreign regulatory compliance, international contracts, entity formation, and engagement with foreign government authorities.

 

Ms. Crane regularly helps clients build scalable privacy and AI governance programs under the GDPR, U.S. privacy laws, the EU AI Act, and emerging global regulatory frameworks, with an emphasis on practical, business-aligned solutions.

 

Before joining Kirton McConkie, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable Jay S. Bybee of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Global Privacy, Data Protection, and Compliance

  • Advise multinational corporations, nonprofits, and foreign entities on compliance with privacy and data protection laws in more than 140 jurisdictions, including the GDPR, UK GDPR, PIPL (China), CPRA (California), LGPD (Brazil), PIPEDA (Canada), and DPDPA (India).
  • Design, implement, and operationalize enterprise-wide privacy compliance programs for organizations operating in highly regulated industries, including finance, education, and healthcare.
  • Lead global privacy audits, regulatory filings, DPIAs, and enterprise privacy management programs.
  • Represent clients in privacy enforcement actions, regulatory investigations, and cybersecurity incidents, including large-scale global breach response.
  • Counsel clients on international data transfer mechanisms, including Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs), Binding Corporate Rules (BCRs), adequacy frameworks, and cross-border risk mitigation strategies.
  • Draft and negotiate privacy and data protection provisions in complex commercial agreements and global vendor arrangements.
  • Advocate before governments and data protection authorities, securing key exceptions and favorable advisory opinions on behalf of clients.

 

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Emerging Technologies

  • Lead a global AI governance and compliance practice focused on regulatory compliance, risk management, and responsible AI deployment.
  • Advise clients on AI risk mitigation throughout the product and solution lifecycle, including governance frameworks, internal controls, and acceptable use policies.
  • Conduct AI risk assessments and compliance evaluations under the EU AI Act and related privacy, IP, consumer protection, and automated decision-making regimes.
  • Counsel technology companies and enterprise adopters on regulatory exposure related to automated systems, machine learning, and predictive analytics.
  • Develop policies and governance structures for ethical AI use, third-party technology risk management, and emerging regulatory obligations.

 

Cross-Border Transactions and International Business and Tax

  • Counsel clients on international regulatory compliance, governance risk, and global market entry strategies.
  • Advise on privacy and regulatory due diligence in cross-border mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, and corporate restructurings.
  • Draft and negotiate international contracts for goods, services, and licenses across all regions globally.
  • Establish and structure subsidiaries, branches, and affiliates across Africa, Latin America, Asia, and the Middle East.
  • Direct and manage foreign counsel on permanent establishment, corporate formation, and regulatory matters in jurisdictions including Argentina, Côte d’Ivoire, India, Sri Lanka, and throughout the Middle East.
  • Advise on international tax issues arising from multinational operations.
  • Counsel on global funds transfers, banking arrangements, guarantees, and PCI compliance.

 

Web Accessibility

  • Advise clients on compliance with the EU Web Accessibility Directive and related frameworks in the UK, Brazil, Japan, and Australia.
  • Develop compliance roadmaps, draft accessibility statements, and guide implementation of WCAG standards.
