Jessica A. Smith

Jessica Smith is a member of the firm’s International section, where she focuses on artificial intelligence (AI). Ms. Smith helps answer clients’ pressing questions about current and upcoming legal requirements for AI by providing up-to-date and accurate analysis of the evolving U.S. and international regulatory landscape, with an emphasis on intellectual property, AI, and privacy laws. Her advice frequently takes into account ongoing litigation, regulatory action, legislative efforts, industry best practices, public sentiment, and more.

 

Ms. Smith advises clients on development and/or use of AI. She helps translate legal frameworks into actionable compliance plans and assists clients in developing strategy, policies, and governance processes supporting AI adoption. A significant portion of her work involves performing precise technical analysis of technology applications and their use cases to evaluate the applicable laws and provide specific recommendations to comply with legal obligations and mitigate risks.

 

Ms. Smith’s previous experience in patent prosecution for AI/ML technologies and intellectual property litigation. Her prior work in the software industry in startups and consulting helps her better meet client needs. In addition to working with in-house counsel, Ms. Smith also communicates directly with AI governance professionals, engineers, data scientists, and other internal stakeholders.
